Year in Review

 A YEAR IN REVIEW-2018!

 JANUARY -

OUR NEW YEAR STARTED OUT - JANUARY 3RD - OUR MID-WEEK SERVICES WITH AN ENCOURAGING MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR SEAN.  HEBREWS CHAPTER 10 VERSES 23-25 SPEAKS OF HOPE IN GOD FOR HE IS FAITHFUL AND TO NOT FORGET THE ASSEMBLING OF OURSELVES TOGETHER.  HIS MESSAGE WAS THAT IN 2018 WE NEED TO BE FAITHFUL TO GOD SO HE CAN CONTINUE TO BE FAITHFUL TO US BY THE MANY BLESSINGS OF EACH TIME WE  ASSEMBLE  OR GATHER TOGETHER IN HIS NAME FOR WORSHIP OR THE STUDYING OF HIS WORD.  OUR CHURCH WAS EXTREMELY BLESSED BY GOD LAST YEAR IN 2017 - MOSTLY IN PART  BY  OUR FAITHFULNESS AND SERVICE TO HIM, AND NOT OURSELVES.  THERE WAS 18 IN ATTENDANCE AND A WONDERFUL HOPE FOR THE NEW YEAR FEELING WAS SHARED BY EVERYONE PRESENT. THERE WERE NO MISSION GROUPS OR YOUTH GROUP.  THE WEATHER CONTINUES TO BE DISTURBING OUR REGULAR SERVICES - THE SUNDAY OF THE 7TH OUR  REGULAR SERVICES WERE, BUT MANAGED TO HAVE A 2:00 P.M. SERVICE. WEDNESDAY THE 10TH WE WERE ABLE TO MEET WITH THE MISSION GROUPS AND BIBLE STUDY, HOWEVER SUNDAY THE 14TH, WE HAD TO COMPLETELY CANCEL ALL SERVICES.  WEDNESDAY NIGHT SERVICES WERE CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW AND ICE STILL LINGERING AROUND THE CHURCH GROUNDS.  IT WASN'T DEEP, BUT JUST A THREAT.  WE WERE SO EXCITED TO RETURN TO REGULAR SERVICES ON THE 21ST - HIGH ATTENDANCE SUNDAY - 91 IN ATTENDANCE - STILL A LOT OF SICKNESS.  AT LEAST 10 REGULARS WERE OUT DUE TO SICKNESS.  IN THE 21ST SERVICE - A MEETING WAS HELD BY THE LADIES TO START A WOMEN'S WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY.  26 IN ATTENDANCE.  ALSO DISCUSSED WAS THE BEGINNING OF A NURSERY DUE TO A VERY GOOD PROBLEM WITH CHILDREN'S CHURCH -A LOT OF KIDS AND NOT ENOUGH WORKERS!  YAY!  WE HAVE VOLUNTEERS THAT WILL ROTATE JUST LIKE CHILDREN'S CHURCH WITH A NURSERY!  THANK YOU LORD FOR THAT PROBLEM...WE'LL TAKE THAT EVERY WEEK! THE LADIES BEGAN THEIR  WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY ON JANUARY 25TH, WHICH  WAS A SUCCESS! EVEN THOUGH THE WEATHER WAS NOT ACCOMMODATING, SNOW ON THE WAY, THERE WERE 16 IN ATTENDANCE.  THIS STUDY IS BY PRICILLA SHIRER, AND THE TITLE IS "HOW TO DISCERN THE VOICE OF GOD." WE ACTUALLY GOT TO HAVE A FULL SERVICE ON SUNDAY THE 28TH WITH SOME SICKNESS STILL IN OUR CONGREGATION AND ONLY HAD 76 IN ATTENDANCE.  CLOSING OUT THE MONTH OF JANUARY, WHICH HAS NOT BEEN GOOD FOR OUR CHURCH, WITH SO MUCH SICKNESS, WEDNESDAY NIGHT THE 31ST WE BEGIN OUR END OF THE MONTH BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR THOSE WHO HAD BIRTHDAYS OR ANNIVERSARIES IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY.  DUE TO SICKNESS AND BAD WEATHER WE ONLY HAD 18 IN ATTENDANCE.

 FEBRUARY

WE BEGAN OUR NEW MONTH MUCH LIKE THE BEGINNING OF LAST MONTH (JANUARY).  WE ONLY GOT TO HAVE AN AFTERNOON SERVICE AT 2:00 WITH 36 IN ATTENDANCE.  THIS WAS DUE TO SNOW IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS THAT LEFT ABOUT AN INCH OF SNOW AROUND THE CHURCH.   STILL A LOT OF SICKNESS IN OUR CHURCH FAMILY.  NOT IN QUITE SOME TIME HAVE WE EXPERIENCED A FLOOD IN HARLAN, HOWEVER, SATURDAY'S HEAVY RAINS CONTINUOUSLY CAUSED HEAVY FLOODING  IN HARLAN COUNTY - NEEDLESS TO SAY LIGGETT WAS A PART OF THAT FLOODING - BOTH ACCESS ROADS WERE COMPLETELY COVERED WITH WATER AND NO MEANS REACHING THE CHURCH - SO FEBRUARY 11TH OUR CHURCH SERVICES WERE CANCELLED.  HOWEVER, WE WERE BACK ON SCHEDULE BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S SERVICES WITH THE ONLY ACCESS THROUGH THE HIGHWAY AND ACROSS THE BRIDGE BY THE OLD COMMISSARY.  THE LADIES BIBLE STUDY WAS STILL IN FULL FORCE WITH A TOTAL OF 16 ENROLLED.  THE 18TH (SUNDAY)  WE ACTUALLY GOT TO HAVE A "FULL" DAY OF SERVICES - WHAT A JOY TO BE BACK TO "REGULAR."  DURING THE WEEK OF THE 19TH - THE REV. BILLY GRAHAM PASSED AND THE WORLD MOURNED HIS DEATH -  SUCH A GREAT MAN OF GOD - SUNDAY THE 25TH WE HAD SERVICES COMMEMORATING DR. GRAHAM.   MONDAY, THE 26TH, THE WMU LADIES MET WITH THEIR MONTHLY MEETING,  5 WAS PRESENT.

 MARCH

PRAISE THE LORD OUR MONTH STARTED MUCH BETTER THAN THE LAST TWO (JANUARY & FEBRUARY).  SUNDAY, MARCH 4TH PASTOR SEAN BEGAN A SERIES OF SERMONS CALLED "THE ROAD TO RESURRECTION SUNDAY."  THESE NEXT FEW SUNDAYS WE'LL HEAR SOME OF THE THINGS THAT JESUS WANTED HIS FOLLOWERS TO KNOW BEFORE HIS DEATH, BURIAL  AND RESURRECTION.  MARCH 8TH, THE LADIES BIBLE STUDY BY PRISCILLA SHIRER CONCLUDED WITH A SIX-WEEK STUDY ON HOW TO DISCERN THE VOICE OF GOD.  A TOTAL OF 18 WAS ENROLLED... WITH AN AVERAGE ATTENDANCE OF 12.  MARCH 11TH - IT WAS ALL ABOUT "TEAMWORK & UNITY"  EVERYONE WORE THEIR FAVORITE TEAM APPAREL (MOSTLY UK WILDCAT BLUE).  IT WAS ALSO "KITE SUNDAY"  WHERE EACH CHILD RECEIVED A KITE -  THIS IS ALSO THE MONTH WE HONOR ANNIE ARMSTRONG--A  MISSIONARY THAT IS RECOGNIZED FOR HER WORK IN THE UNITED STATES OR BETTER KNOWN AS NORTH AMERICAN MISSIONS.  IT IS ALSO CALLED THE "EASTER OFFERING." ON THE 18TH, WHICH WAS PASTOR'S WIFE APPRECIATION WEEK,  WE RECOGNIZED OUR PASTOR'S WIFE, KELLY.  SHE IS SUCH AN ENCOURAGEMENT TO OUR PASTOR AND OUR CHURCH, ESPECIALLY WITH THE YOUNGER CHILDREN.  SHE'S ACTIVE IN CREATING  IDEALS  THAT INTEREST  THE YOUNGER CHILDREN AND ALSO CREATES A CHRISTIAN AND GODLY EXAMPLE.  SHE IS ONE OF THE TEACHERS OF OUR MISSION FRIENDS MISSION GROUP OF AGES 9 AND UNDER.  AND IS ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THE NURSERY. MARCH 25TH BEING "PALM SUNDAY" OUR SERVICES WERE VERY SPECIAL IN REMEMBERING OUR LORD AS HE WAS RECOGNIZED AS THE KING OF KINGS;  "HOSANNA, HOSANNA, BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!"   OUR SERVICES THAT DAY ENDED WITH OUR REGULAR END OF THE MONTH SINGING SERVICE, WHICH IS ALWAYS LEAVES US WITH  SUCH A GOOD, SPIRITUAL FEELING.

 APRIL

EASTER (RESURRECTION) SUNDAY, IS A DAY THAT NO DOUBT IS THE GREATEST DAY OF THE YEAR. A TIME WHEN WE'LL SEE THE MOST ATTEND CHURCH EVER IN ALL OF THE SUNDAYS OF THE ENTIRE  YEAR.  OUR ATTENDANCE WAS 152  THAT WAS COUNTED... MIGHT HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 10 MORE OUTSIDE HIDING EGGS. WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME TO SEE THAT MANY JAM PACKED INTO OUR CHURCH.  WOULDN'T IT BE WONDERFUL IF EVERY SUNDAY WAS EASTER?  THE CHOIR WAS FULL  - THERE WERE SEATS IN THE ISLES AND PEOPLE IN THE BACK SITTING IN THE FLOOR.  SOME WERE STANDING... NOW THAT'S AWESOME... STANDING ROOM ONLY!  THERE WAS AN EASTER EGG HUNT AND THE EASTER BUNNY WAS THERE FOR MANY, MANY PHOTOS.  SUCH A WONDERFUL DAY! HALLELUJAH, HE IS RISEN!  APRIL 8TH OUR ATTENDANCE WAS QUITE THE OPPOSITE FROM THE PREVIOUS SUNDAY... IT BEING THE WEEK OF SPRING BREAK FOR THE SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES, MOST TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE WEEK IN HAVING PLANS AND TRIPS OUT OF TOWN.  AND THINKING THAT THE NEXT SUNDAY (15TH)  WOULD BE BETTER... ENDED UP NOT MUCH BETTER DUE TO SO MUCH  SICKNESS.. HOSPITAL STAYS AND FAMILIES CARRYING FOR THE ONES IN THE HOSPITAL.  STOMACH VIRUSES AND ALLERGIES HAVE TAKEN A TOLL ON SOME OF OUR CHURCH FAMILIES, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO BREATHE AND MISERABLE CONDITIONS WITH ITCHY EYES AND RUNNY NOSES.  HOWEVER WE ARE SO THANKFUL THAT THERE WERE 72 THAT CAME OUT TO WORSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER ON THE LORD'S DAY, IN THE LORD'S HOUSE. APRIL 22ND SERVICES PROVED THAT THE LORD IS STILL ON THE MOVE.  OUR ATTENDANCE WAS BACK UP WITH 87 THERE IN THE MORNING WORSHIP SERVICE.  ALSO ON THE EVENING OF THE 22ND AT 5:00 P.M. THE KENTUCKY STATE POLICE CONDUCTED A CHURCH SECURITY PROGRAM ON KEEPING OUR CHURCH SECURE FROM WOULD BE THIEVES.  ALSO HE SPOKE ON HOW TO RESPOND TO AN ATTACK FROM A GUNMAN THAT WOULD INTERRUPT THE SERVICES WITH THE INTENT TO HARM SOMEONE WITH SOME FORM OF WEAPON.  THIS MEETING LASTED A COUPLE OF HOURS AND THE EVENING SERVICES WERE CANCELLED. THE NEXT SUNDAY (29TH) WAS OUR "END OF THE MONTH" SINGING SERVICE WHICH FEATURED NEWLY ACQUAINTED COUPLE BRANDON AND MOLLY GRIGSBY, WHICH HAVE BEEN COMING ON A REGULAR BASIS FOR SEVERAL WEEKS... THEY SANG AND BRANDON PLAYED THE GUITAR AND BANJO. WE WERE BLESSED BY THEIR SINGING. TO RECAP SOME OF THE OTHER ACTIVITIES IN APRIL.... SINCE THE LADIES HAVE CONCLUDED THEIR BIBLE STUDY THE MEN HAVE STARTED THEIRS - EVERY TUESDAY EVENING THE MEET AT 6:30 P.M.  ALSO DURING THE ENTIRE MONTH OF APRIL WHICH WAS "AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH"   OUR CHURCH WITH THE HELP OF THE PASTOR'S PALS COLLECTED EACH SUNDAY FROM THEIR "AUTISM BUCKETS" OVER $200.00 FOR THIS CAUSE WHICH WAS GIVEN TO LISA PERRY - CHAIRPERSON- TO BE USED FOR "BLESSING BOXES" THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY FOR THE HOMELESS AND HUNGRY.  WE ALSO CELEBRATED OUR MONTHLY BIRTHDAY/ANNIVERSARY PARTY FOR THOSE HAVING BIRTHDAYS OR ANNIVERSARIES IN THE MONTH OF APRIL.  THE WMU LADIES ENDED THE MONTH WITH THEIR MONTHLY MEETING ON MONDAY THE 30TH.

 JUNE

WITH THE ENDING OF SCHOOL AND VACATIONS ON THE RISE... OUR ATTENDANCE HAS TAKEN A PLUNGE.   HOWEVER, EVERYONE DESERVES A VACATION.  SEVERAL FAMILIES HAVE TAKEN THEIRS AT THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOL'S END.  THE FIRST SUNDAY IN JUNE WE ADDED ANOTHER MEMBER TO OUR CHURCH FAMILY.  RHONDA ARVIN ACCEPTED THE LORD AS HER SAVIOR AND WAS BAPTIZED INTO OUR FELLOWSHIP JUNE 3RD.  AS PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED WE ALL NEED A VACATION... SO DO PASTORS - PASTOR SEAN AND HIS FAMILY WERE ON VACATION ON THE SECOND SUNDAY OF THE MONTH AND IN HIS ABSENCE, BRO BOB CORNETT HAD THE MESSAGE ON THAT SUNDAY MORNING ... WITH BRO. RICK BURKHART HAD THE MESSAGE THAT SUNDAY NIGHT.  BRO.  JULY

AS IN EVERY JULY OUR CHURCH ALWAYS LOOKS FORWARD TO SUMMER ACTIVITIES WITH EACH OF THE GROUPS AND THE CHURCH AS A WHOLE - BEGINNING WITH THE FIRST SUNDAY IN JULY WHICH WAS THE 1ST... OUR ATTENDANCE WAS 90...SO BLESSED FOR OUR FAITHFUL CONGREGATION. THIS WEEK THE 4TH COMES ON WEDNESDAY THEREFORE WE MOVED OUR WEDNESDAY NIGHT  SERVICES UP TO TUESDAY AND HAD OUR  ANNUAL "FOURTH OF JULY"  COOKOUT - OUR JOY OF CELEBRATION TURNED TO A DIFFERENT KIND OF CELEBRATION - OUR DEAR, DEVOTED MEMBER, GLADYS HATFIELD RECEIVED HER ETERNAL AND HEAVENLY FLIGHT - GLADYS WAS SUCH A WONDERFUL PERSON, DELIGHTFUL, DEDICATED AND LOVED BY MANY, MANY PEOPLE. SHE WILL BE MISSED, BUT WE KNOW THAT SHE IS IN HEAVEN WITH A NEW BODY.  SECOND SUNDAY OF JULY OUR  ATTENDANCE WAS DOWN A BIT DUE TO SOME VACATIONS, HOWEVER WE WERE BLESSED TO HAVE 68 IN ATTENDANCE. THE NEXT SUNDAY MOLLY AND BRANDON GRIGSBY SANG A FEW INSPIRATIONAL  SONGS, WHICH WAS FOLLOWED BY A VERY POWERFUL MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SEAN ON "NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES"- EVERY SUMMER OUR KIDS, WORKERS, AND THE ENTIRE CHURCH LOOKS FORWARD TO VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL. THIS YEAR OUR THEME WAS ALL ABOUT "SPORTS-GET INTO  THE GAME-GAME ON"  IT STARTED OFF ON A BAD NOTE, BUT WE DIDN'T LET THAT (SATAN) DETER OUR GOAL OF HAVING A GREAT VBS-  A POWER OUTAGE OVER MUCH OF THE  COUNTY SUNDAY AFTERNOON, CAUSED US  TO CANCEL OUR  "KICK-OFF" PARTY FOR  VBS - MONDAY  WE WERE READY FOR ACTION AND READY TO GET STARTED -OUR HIGHEST ATTENDANCE WAS ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT WITH 92 -  DIDN'T QUITE REACH OUR GOAL OF 100, HOWEVER, SOME REGULARS WERE ON PLANNED VACATIONS. WITH THAT WE STILL MANAGED TO AVERAGE 85 EVERY NIGHT -  THANKING GOD FOR A GREAT VBS, AND WE WERE EXCITED TO HAVE THAT MANY DURING THE TIME WHEN MOST VACATIONS WOULD BE OVER - THE LAST NIGHT OF VBS, WE DECIDED TO GIVE OUT OUR "BACK TO SCHOOL BASH"  SCHOOL SUPPLIES- SCHOOLS WOULD STARTING THE NEXT WEEK AND WHILE WE HAD A LOT OF THE CHILDREN THERE, THOUGHT IT BEST TO GIVE OUT THOSE SUPPLIES.  JULY ENDED UP BEING A "BITTER-SWEET" MONTH- THANKING GOD FOR EVERYTHING!

 AUGUST

AS IN EVERY "BACK TO SCHOOL" TIME OF THE YEAR - OUR ATTENDANCE FALLS OFF A BIT - HOWEVER, THROUGH THE MONTH OF AUGUST WE MANAGED TO STAY ABOVE AVERAGE WITH THE LOWEST ATTENDANCE OF 70 AND A HIGH OF 87- SOME FAMILIES WERE GETTING IN THAT LAST MINI-VACATION BEFORE HAVING TO SETTLE DOWN UNTIL FALL BREAK.   AS USUAL OUR ANNUAL "BACK TO SUNDAY SCHOOL" INCENTIVE WAS THE SUNDAY OF THE 19TH - HAD 40 IN SUNDAY SCHOOL MAKING ONLY 5 SHORT OF OUR GOAL.  THE PASTOR'S  PALS STARTED A PROGRAM OF TAKING LITTLE BUCKETS AND GOING THROUGH THE CONGREGATION FOR COINS FOR A MISSIONARY THAT WILL BE LEAVING IN EARLY FALL ON A MISSION TRIP.  THEY WERE EXCITED AND COLLECTED OVER THE NEXT MONTH CLOSE TO $400.00.
